Ask anyone selling online in Nepal about their biggest challenge, and payments top the list. The good news: integrating digital payments is easier and cheaper than most business owners think. The better news: I'm about to walk you through every option, honestly.
Why Digital Payments Matter More Than Ever
Cash-on-delivery (COD) has been the crutch of Nepali e-commerce — but it's an expensive crutch: return rates of 30–40% when customers refuse packages, cash handling risks, and delivery services holding your money for weeks. Digital payments collapse those problems to almost nothing. Post-COVID, QR-code payment adoption has exploded, and customers increasingly expect to pay online.
The Major Players
eSewa — The Market Leader
Nepal's most widely used wallet with millions of users. Their merchant API is well-documented, integration takes 2–4 weeks including KYC, and customers trust the brand. Setup requires company registration documents and a dedicated merchant account. For most stores, eSewa integration is non-negotiable — it's where your customers already are.
Khalti — The Fast Grower
Khalti offers clean APIs, competitive rates and excellent developer support. Their web checkout and SDK integrations are arguably the smoothest in Nepal. For businesses targeting younger, digitally-savvy customers, Khalti is essential.
FonePay QR — The Ubiquitous Bridge
FonePay connects all the banks — customers scan one QR and pay from any Nepali bank app. Setup is simple (any business bank account can enroll), making it the easiest digital payment to accept. The limitation: it's QR-based, so it works best for in-person or invoice-style payments rather than seamless checkout flows.
Card Payments (via Himalayan Bank, Nabil, etc.)
Cards remain essential for international customers and large-ticket purchases. Nepal's card acquiring rates run higher than wallets, but volume justifies it for established stores. For international sales, Stripe or 2Checkout fill the gap.
The Integration Reality
Here's what integration actually requires: business registration + PAN documents, a bank account, merchant KYC forms (typically 1–2 weeks for approval), and a developer to wire the payment API into your checkout. Most merchants discover that payment APIs from different providers have inconsistent documentation — one reason our e-commerce builds include payment integration as a standard, not an extra.
- Typical setup time: 2–4 weeks including KYC approvals
- Transaction fees: generally 1–2.5% depending on provider and volume
- Settlement: usually T+1 to T+3 into your bank account
- Must-haves for approval: company registration, PAN, bank account in business name
Our Recommended Stack for Nepali Stores
For most businesses we build for: eSewa + Khalti + COD as the core three, with FonePay QR available at pickup/counter. That combination covers 95%+ of how Nepali customers actually pay. International sellers add Stripe.
We handle the entire process for our e-commerce clients — merchant applications, KYC paperwork, API integration and testing — so you just watch orders arrive with payments already confirmed. Call +977 9845981510 or visit our Damak office to discuss your online store.
